Tarzana was named for the character “Tarzan of the Apes” in Edgar Rice Burrough’s novels. When he was in his twenties, Burroughs had moved to Los Angeles and developed the Tarzan character and novels as a hobby. It was highly successful, and in 1919, Burroughs purchased a large tract of land from General Harrison Gray Otis, the publisher of the Los Angeles Times newspaper at the time. General Otis had acquired the land in 1913 when he was one of the promoters of a housing development company. His original purchase included 550 acres.
The area known as Tarzana occupies the south-central portion of the San Fernando Valley. It encompasses the northern slopes of the Santa Monica Mountains between the communities of Encino to the east and Woodland Hills to the west. Tarzana covers approximately 8 square miles and was home to some 28,000 plus residents as of the year 2000.
The residents of the area that surrounded the Burroughs ranch decided to become an incorporated city in 1928, and called the city Tarzana. Tarzana has the distinction of being the first city in the San Fernando Valley to have a swimming pool.
